Writer's Journal #13

Sometimes as a hobby I like to take surveys to earn a few cents an overall a few dollars. I have done the surveys on social media generally and oftentimes they have multiple steps to the surveys. The purpose of the survey is to find out what products people use and how often in the audience I find it’s generally whoever is doing the research. Usually they leave out the part because they want to do a more anonymous survey. The survey I did consisted of demographic questions to start off the survey. Then it asked more questions by closed questions, rank ordered questions, and then open questions. The most recent survey I completed consisted of about 50 questions all together. It was a pretty thorough survey. I have also created surveys myself. At my job, we had a social media contest and then I wanted to see how everyone enjoyed or didn’t enjoy the contest. I also wanted to see the demographics of people that participated so that we could target more of that group next year or maybe expand the demographic next year. My survey was 10 questions and did not have the rank ordered questions. Sadly, only five people completed it, so it was not the best results to see.

I believe in regards to my research project, the survey aspect will not be relevant until after we have implemented the recycling system in place to see how it is going. I suppose I could do a survey to figure out who really is interested in implementing the system and their responses. This way I could potentially get a better sense of if the sustainability industry is actually growing or if people are as interested in it as I perceive they are. I think every research project is different though so I am not sure if it would be necessary for this research project.

If I went off of the idea of surveying before the research project was completed, I would survey everyone that follows our company pages. Therefore, I would advertise the survey on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram because these are the pages we use for all our social media posts. Everyone that follows these pages chose to because they usually are already a customer. We have about 300 followers total and this would be a great amount of people to survey. The results would be valuable to this project because we can see how many people actually care about the sustainability movement within the company and then we could project how many people would be attracted to our company just because of that being implemented within our company.
