The Persuasive Research Project

I began working at TSS Accounting in the beginning of May 2020. As I was working, I began to realize that every day we threw out several sheets of paper as a whole and as shredded paper. Working at an accounting firm company has shown me how much paper we print per day as well as how much paper goes into the trash that ends up directly filling up our landfills. In a typical day we print up around 50 pages of paper. In the long run this equals out to 250 pages per week or 13,000 pages per year that go directly into the trash. Looking at these numbers we can see that there is something that needs to be changed. As a millennial, it is incredibly important to bring about a more sustainable world especially because that is the direction that everyone is heading to. Of course, this is just taking into consideration the paper that we consume in the office and does not take into consideration the plastic or cardboard or anything else.

In my research, the main question I would like to answer is how can we implement a recycling system successfully within our accounting firm, TSS Accounting, right now?  More Americans are expecting to use environmentally friendly companies in all aspects of their lives. Therefore, most people have transitions to electronic ways such as email or virtual statements on their bank accounts or other transaction accounts versus a regular paper statement in the mail.  I want TSS Accounting to stop filling our landfills and to reuse all the paper that they are filling up the landfill with. There are many great ways we can reuse paper such as pet cage liners, doodle pad, papier-mache, origami, or even lighting a fire with (Cheung).  Paper and paper board products make up the largest percentage of all materials and trash landfill which equals to about 25% with plastic following at 13.2% (EPA). This is a huge number and much too large that we could easily minimize with a little work.  I would like TSS Accounting to get on board on the recycling train to save our planet and minimize our landfills. So, I repeat, going back to the question of how can we implement a great recycling system within TSS Accounting?

Without a great recycling system in place it could be a danger to society.  “Exposure to H2S, a tracer of airborne contamination from landfills, was associated with lung cancer mortality as well as with mortality and morbidity for respiratory diseases” (Mataloni).  By continuing to fill our landfills we are not only harming the environment but also harming the other humans that live within a few miles’ radius of the landfills. Living around landfills is extremely dangerous because as we read in our statistics, it can cause lung cancer and other respiratory diseases. Living around landfills is extremely dangerous because as we read in our statistics it can cause lung cancer and other respiratory disease.  Without recycling garbage piles up, landfills increase, fossil fuels disappear sooner, and natural resources die out. Without recycling and combustion about 258,000,000 tons of garbage and recyclables would have filled landfills and begun to pile up even higher according to statistics in 2014 (Brenner).  If we do not recycle, then our resources will run out.  We are starting now to realize that the human population is increasing immensely and therefore it is very likely we will run out of resources sooner than we think.   About 50 years ago, the world population was almost four billion and now it is up past seven billion people.  The population has doubled in the past 50 years.  We need to start worrying about the resources we have and start taking steps to preserve them to be able to make new resources.

Recycling is becoming a more common trend. If you look at the graph pictured, it shows recycling and composting from the years 1960 to the years 2017. You can see the paper category has increased tremendously over the years from being a tiny amount in 1960 with about 5 tons to being a huge amount with about 44 tons in 2017 (EPA).  “Making simple moves toward a greener office, like establishing a workplace recycling program that’s

easy to follow, can help you feel happier – and more productive – at work” (Ezop).  Recycling has not only increased in general but has also encompassed benefits to the company by increasing employee satisfaction that participates in it.  By doing this, it also increases the overall image of the company.  Knowing this, TSS Accounting will not only have bragging rights but also pop out when a potential client is deciding between two companies.  Recycling at TSS Accounting is not only good for the environment but also great for increasing business.  “Almost one in 10 millennials said they would be willing to quit a job if their employer wasn't sustainable” (Rosengren).  This is a huge statistic because millennials make up the majority of employees in the work field.  TSS Accounting consists of three millennial employees who make up 100% of the company.  One of the quitting would do great damage to the company because of the need for a good employee who knows the company already.  This same source also said that 80% of millennials think it is the company’s job to implement the recycling system.

One of the first steps to take when it comes to recycling is to introduce a centralized recycling bin. At TSS Accounting we do keep our budget very low and so we are only able to afford one.  Having a centralized recycling bin helps employees know where it is always as well as what always goes in it. Most bins can be labeled with a sticker to show what should or should not be going into the recycling bin.  Another great method we can implement at TSS Accounting is to get rid of plastic or paper cups. At TSS Accounting we drink coffee regularly and therefore use about five paper cups per day which equals a bunch of waste. The best way to implement a recycling system in this case would just be to transition to normal ceramic cups that we can wash. Perhaps one of the best ways to recycle or reduce even paper would be to use online systems for filing and tracking measurements or client information.  There is a recycling center right in the same city as TSS Accounting called The Recycling Experts which is also a four-minute drive from TSS Accounting.  This is a very safe and convenient drive to a recycling center on my way home.  This would not cut time away from company time whatsoever.  If you look at the diagram to the right, there is a great little chart that displays ways you can recycle in the company without involving much work.  Putting up charts at work is a great way to familiarize employees with recycling.

Ways To Recycle At Work

One might think that this all seems too good to be true.  Like everything recycling has its downfalls too. It could potentially seem as if recycling is expensive and a waste of time.  Recycling as a matter of fact takes time to implement in the workforce.  Everyone at TSS Accounting must be educated on the proper procedures on where to recycle and how to recycle. This can be easily done in a regular company meeting so that everyone understands the proper procedures.  According to the company Recycling At Work, if you make the pledge to implement the recycling system in your workforce they will give you a 15% discount on recycling bins of all shapes and sizes and they will also give free educational tools and a 10 step action plan for success within the program. They will also give free promo materials to share the TSS Accounting success with the world. Companies like this promote recycling within the workforce because they are passionate about recycling and saving the planet. So, while recycling might seem like an expensive endeavor, companies such as this show us that it can be very affordable and quite cheap to implement the recycling system within TSS Accounting. Due to TSS Accounting being 100% millennial-based, this will make the whole transition process to recycling so much easier. According to previous research we have found out that millennials care the most about recycling and therefore it should be much easier to get each of the members of TSS Accounting to participate in the recycling system. I know I for one, who makes up 1/3 of the company, is thrilled with the idea.  If we cheer on the idea overall, I believe that most people will agree that recycling at TSS Accounting is the best idea not only for the planet but also for the business.

I do think that with more time and energy in regard to this project we would be able to potentially do a test project to figure out if this idea would be successful and how to make it better perhaps.  We might be able to put in one recycling system in place and try it out for two weeks and then survey the results and see where we should go from there. I think the hardest task will be to get out of our old habits and into the new ones.  As we stated before a centralized recycling bin would make it a lot easier for everyone to remember that

recycling is such a huge deal and exactly where we need to put it but I think perhaps laziness might get into the way of taking the recycling to the recycling center daily or weekly. There are some unknown such as exactly when we should take the recycling and we don’t know how much recycling will fill the bin and how heavy it will be and how much work it would be for me or one of my employees to take it to the recycling center.  In the long run I think given more time we would be able to figure out the more specifics of every situation and be able to discover a solution or perhaps implement a better system based off of our test try. Unfortunately, this research project is very limited on time and so we are working with the mere fact we know.

The real question is why have we never done this before? Well according to a personal interview I did with Julie and Travis Bart, the owners of TSS Accounting, they had previously tried a recycling system but because it cut on company finances to put in the Time and effort it was just not worth it in the long run.  They had not had an assistant at the time to figure out the logistics of everything and therefore had no time to implement the recycling system in place.  Both Julie and Travis Bart also lacked proper knowledge of what to do to make it successful.  This is a key detail in why so many companies fall victim to helping destroy the environment.  TSS Accounting needs to get off that train and get on the recycling train before it is too late.

Anybody that cares about themselves, their families, and their environment will be 100% on board with recycling at TSS Accounting. That’s why I’m saying to you today to make a difference in your community and look within yourself to start this process and make a better change not only for the environment but also for bettering your business. It is small changes such as this one that will change the way our business works in the way not only your employees but also our current and potential clients see our company.  Emily Deschanel said it best, “It makes a big difference to recycle. It makes a big difference to use recycled products. It makes a big difference to reuse things, to not use the paper cup – and each time you do, that’s a victory.”  We need to start caring about our environment and planet before time runs out and we are left with nothing to use in our what used to be a resourceful world.  There is no better time like today to start acting and be serious.  Perhaps in 50 years from now the population will have increased to about 14 billion people.  How are you going to feel then?
