The Project Proposal

“There is no such thing as ‘away’. When we throw anything away it must go somewhere.”  This is a powerful statement by Annie Leonard, an American proponent of sustainability, representing how no matter where we toss our trash it goes somewhere whether that may be a good or bad place.  Working as a Solutioneer at the Greenlight Solutions Foundation and a tax resolution junior at TSS Accounting, I began noticing that we threw out a bunch of paper every day at the accounting firm but there was no recycling system in place.  As a Gen Z, it is incredibly important to bring about a more sustainable world and that is the direction the world is moving to.  Therefore, due to the new sustainability movement going on within the world, I want to answer this question: how can we implement a strong recycling system within our accounting firm right now?

I began working at TSS Accounting in May of 2020.  I began to notice that there was no recycling bin or any sort of recycling system in place in the office building that I worked at.  I started to question us because it has a Gen Z I know it is important to me to have a sustainable world and because our world in general, especially in America is moving towards that way of thinking. We shred documents and then they immediately go inside the trash where it is taken to the dump outside the office until the garbage man picks it up and then it is taken to the landfill.  This not only happens to the paper in her office but also the cans and plastic bottles we use regularly.  That’s when I realized a change needs to happen.

United States History of Recycling

In our year of 2020, it has become extremely important in all companies to do everything we can to have a more sustainable environment and the world we live in. This includes implementing recycling and different more environmentally friendly systems within the companies.  More and more people want to have environmentally friendly companies and sometimes even expected. Therefore for TSS Accounting to get on board with implementing environment friendly strategies will help client satisfaction increase overall.  Not getting on board with this movement could potentially do more harm to the company as more and more people become educated on the environment and how we impact it within companies.  If you look above at the graph, you will notice how total recycled material has incredibly increased since the 1960's.  On average we shred about ten pieces of papers per day during a five day work week. That equals out to 2,600 pieces of paper being shred per year and thrown into the dump.  This might not seem like a big deal but in the long run, it’s a great deal.  Our company is a small business company but if other companies do this it increases the overall waste in the landfills versus recyclable items.

I propose to research this and answer my question of how we can implement the recycling system within our accounting firm right now. In my research, it will require different ways we can include recycling and different positions we could have the system in place.  This would also include finding the cost of recycling bins and ways to cut down on costs like maybe using old shipment boxes versus buying new recycling bins. The other thing I would have to research is where the closest recycling center is in the city of Walled Lake where TSS Accounting is located. Most of my research could be found online and by calling different areas to figure out where exactly recycling is being done and how I could start it.

Implementing the recycling system would affect not only myself but also the other three employees.  As I previously mentioned it would also increase the number of clients we have and their trust in us because we care for the environment and society.  Clients love it when they see their companies that they use implementing strategies that show they care.  By doing this we show our clients that we care about them and the world that they live in.  By putting up a recycling system we would also have to cut time from our day to take the recyclables to the centers. This might directly impact me or one of my other coworkers.

Due to the new sustainability movement happening across all of America, we need to figure out how to implement that recycling system within our accounting firm right now before we are seen in a negative light.  Making a change in our sustainability and our environment is becoming a very common thing within our society. We need to start making a change within our small business company before it’s too late. It will help all of us in the end because it will help us have a more environmentally friendly world.  We will stop filling landfills with things that can be reused and therefore breathe cleaner air. It will help every single person in the long run.
