One of the most vital writing skills anyone can have is to be able to structure words and paragraphs in ways that hook the reader.  As I wrote my persuasion piece, I was able to use not only research but also detailed paragraphs to keep my readers interested and wanting to read more.  This is particularly a useful skill now that I work as a blog writer for an accounting firm.  It is a skill necessary outside of mere writing assignments.  To help the company grow, I need to regularly write interesting and attention-grabbing material to raise awareness to the company and help the company find new clients.  The content itself must run smoothly so that the readers and blog visitors can read my article without any interruption or errors.  The worst is when I am reading something from an intelligent source and then I find a flaw in the structure of the paragraph or minor errors such as a spelling error.

Literary Analysis

One of the most memorable writing assignments I ever had was in my 8th grade English class.  I had to write a persuasion paper of whatever subject I wanted to write about which I chose a rather controversial subject.  Little did I know how it would influence my writing skills and my relationship to writing.  My persuasion essay was about why everyone should become pro-life if they are not already.  It was a four-page essay with heavy research and proper formatting.  To be able to have that persuasive essay be persuasive, I needed to learn and include certain skills, such as, research skills, structure, and voice skills.  I realize looking back, that my persuasion essay changed the way I viewed writing.  It made me realize that every problem in society could not be changed unless you knew how to get people to listen.  I realize now, with writing, we have the power to make people listen by what and how we write.  Writing the persuasion essay was the most difficult essay I had done at the time and required a lot of careful planning.  It also required non-bias writing so that I could get readers to side with me and my ideas.

Providing research in many writing forms and projects suggests strong evidence of why someone can trust what you are saying.  Overall, it gives me, the writer, credibility.  Most people want to naturally believe what I am saying yet there are some people that are happy to make up any myths to get you on their side and the readers may accuse me of such notions.  With research, I was able to provide evidence of not only why I thought the way I did but also why my readers should think like me too.  In my essay I provided research done by many websites and scientists on the negative effects of abortion on women and the harm it causes.  I tried to stay away from religious articles and scientists so that I could provide non bias evidence.  Learning how to use research to win an argument is now something I do regularly.  When I get into a disagreement with someone, I can use the research I have done in the past to help them see my viewpoint and be able to communicate peacefully.

I learned that in writing persuasion, I needed to have a clear strong voice in my essay so that the readers would be persuaded.  They needed to see that I am strong just based off the wording I use, and my way is the right way.  It might sound bold to say it like that, but bold is what gets your reader to understand how serious I am about what I am writing about.  I realized that with a strong voice in my writing, I was able to make myself heard.  I feel powerful knowing now that I have that skill because of my writing experiences, the persuasion piece specifically has helped me see that.

Writing the pro-life persuasion piece in 8th grade made me realize that what I wrote mattered and that anything I write today from a simple text to a campaign election speech must be well researched, properly structured, and voiced strongly.  Because of this essay, every time I see a problem in the world and want to complain to my Facebook friends, I remember that if I want anyone to listen to me, then I need to use the writing skills I have learned through my persuasive writing project to get people to listen to me.  I see myself as a powerful writer now.  I can if I want to, get anybody to think like I do with the skills I have learned over time as a writer.
